"Once upon a faith" is the title of a long-term project which aims to seize the intensity of a moment of faith and to capture the collective or individual—sometimes very personal— emotions which are peculiar to sacred places. With this title comes a theme which can take an infinite number of forms, depending on religions and places of worship and pilgrimage.

The first part of this project—"Pilgrims and rituals along the River Ganga"—takes us to Vanarasi and Haridwar, two of the seven sacred cities of India which attract thousands of pilgrims from all over the country every day.

The idea of "Once upon a faith... " occurred to me in April 2016, when I went back, thirty years after my first trip to India, to these two cities which had left a deep mark on me. This trip took the shape of a pilgrimage in an active life in which photography takes a whole new place.

ALONG THE RIVER GANGA - VARANASI

Vanarasi is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. People go there to die in order to attain moksha and hence escape the reincarnation cycle.

ALONG THE RIVER GANGA - HARIDWAR

Haridwar is located not far from the source of the River Ganga, exactly where the sacred river flows into the plains. Every twelve years, the city hosts the Kumbh Mela, a pilgrimage which gathers millions of people together.
